Outdoor Education is an experiential teaching method. It utilizes the outdoor environment as a learning laboratory and utilizes activities that are closely related to or dependent upon the natural environment as learning catalyses. Experiential education is defined as "a process though which a learner constructs knowledge, skill, and value from direct experiences." The direct experiences in Outdoor Education are typically active and engaging activities which take place in an outdoor environment and/or for the purpose of learning about the natural environment.
As of December of 2004, the Health and Kinesiology Dept. has decided not to offer a degree in Outdoor Education. That includes the ODED Major, Minor, and Master's programs.
There will still be workshops, and outdoors type Physical Education classes, as well as the ChallengeWorks program which utilizes our challenge course to teach leadership, communication, and teamwork.
